The University of Coimbra is the foremost learning institution in Portugal. The city is built around it. It is not the only academic institution in the city, as there is the Instituto Politecnico de Coimbra, the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Coimbra, the Instituto Superior Miguel Torga, The Instituto Superior Bissaya Barreto, the Escola Universitaria Vasco da Gama and the Escola Universitaria das Artes das Coimbra.
